Mental Health and the Church’s Mission
Coming to Terms with an Age-Old Stigma

In the wake of recent school, church and community murders, many people are talking about mental illness, even if it is because of fear and confusion about how to end these horrible incidents. According to the National Institutes of Health, one in four adults experience mental illnesses each year and at least half of all Americans have such disorders at some time in their lives. Church members are not immune to being a part of the statistics and often suffer in silence or stop attending church because they are not receiving the support they so desperately need. What can the Church do to change this? We will discuss how your church can make a difference through awareness and well planned, caring responses to make the emotionally hurt feel welcome and accepted in your congregation.
